Dr. Susan Lim - Experience

Experience is important in the medical field, and for Dr. Susan Lim it has built upon itself to bring her to where she is today. Dr Susan Lim’s career in surgery took off when she was awarded the GB Ong Gold Medal in Surgery at the Edinburgh Royal College of Surgeons in 1984. Upon her return to Singapore, she was appointed as a lecturer in the University Department of Surgery at Singapore General Hospital and National University Hospital. She then received the Churchill Scholarship (Gulbenkian) to undertake a PhD in transplantation Immunology at the University of Cambridge in 1985.  This three-year study in Cambridge under Sir Roy Calne set the stage for what Dr. Susan Lim would be remembered for throughout Asia.

During her time in the United Kingdom studying at the University of Cambridge, Dr. Susan Lim was exposed to, and gained valuable experience as a Surgical Transplant Fellow at Addenbrookes Hospital under Sir Roy Calne. She also performed postgraduate research that furthered her knowledge in Transplantation Immunology. Once she earned her degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Transplantation Immunology, Dr. Susan Lim of Singapore returned home with the knowledge and technical experience she gained there.

Dr. Susan Lim's surgery experience in the UK was what helped prepare her for the road ahead. She worked as a Senior Lecturer-in-Surgery at National University Hospital, and was also appointed as Transplant Surgeon by the Ministry of Health in 1989. Just one year following she would lead a team to perform the first cadaveric liver transplant in Asia. Dr. Susan Lim was only the second woman in the world to accomplish that.
